I think we can safely say that the release of the PS5 has not been a smooth one. In yet another move to prevent disappointment, eBay has condemned scammers using photos of the console to lure in desperate gamers. Buyers then spend a disproportionate amount only to receive the photograph of the console and nothing else. This comes as the latest setback amongst many with the next gen launch.(Get this amazing deal for PS Plus at HALF OFF while supplies last here)
In a statement to Eurogamer, eBay said: “We condemn these opportunistic sellers who are attempting to mislead other users. We are in the process of removing all listings for photos of PS5s from our marketplace and will be taking appropriate action against the sellers.”
It has been a troublesome launch for PlayStation’s latest console. Both pre-order and launch day caused retail websites to crash and sell out almost instantaneously. Websites in the UK such as John Lewis, Tesco, and Game all showed error pages as customers attempted to get their hands on a console in the rush.
Unfortunately some people did manage to get their hands on a sale confirmation, but not just for one PS5. Reports are ripe of ‘scalpers’ buying up hundreds of consoles in order to sell them privately later. These then end up on websites like eBay for much more than the original £450 retail price.
But for those fans who were lucky enough to secure a single console for their own use, it hasn’t been plain sailing. Reports are coming out that Amazon deliveries in the UK contain anything but the PS5 that’s expected. Cat litter, dog food, bed sheets, and even an air fryer have been unboxed instead of the next gen console.
eBay continued their statement as a warning for buyers. “For any purchase, but especially highly priced or in-demand items, buyers should exercise caution and thoroughly read the listing description,” adding that: “Buyers who receive an item which is not as described are entitled to a refund via our eBay Money Back Guarantee, provided they completed the transaction on the eBay platform.”
At the moment there are still plenty of adverts claiming to sell “Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition 1TB Console – White (PHOTO)” or similar. Regardless of the warning, people have still placed bids on these items. Some are well into the hundreds of pounds and dollars. Hopefully, when new stock is available through reputable sellers and stores, these opportunities for scams will die down.(Get this amazing deal for PS Plus at HALF OFF while supplies last here)
