Video games have always been treated as a pastime to avoid studying. One professor from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking to change that. In an announcement on Twitter, the US Historian revealed he will be focusing on the Red Dead Redemption franchise in a class starting in August.
As reported by HypeBeast, Tore Olsson disclosed his plans for HIUS 383: Red Dead America last week. It’s a module that will look at the historical background of the Red Dead franchise alongside the reality of the time. Olsson stated, “though often historically inaccurate, the games skillfully broach a number of crucial historical issues in the 1899-1911 period”. This includes women’s suffrage, frontier mythology, settler colonialism and Native People’s hardship, the Mexican revolution, and the formation of Jim Crow racial violence.
Unfortunately, the class is capped at 35 otherwise I think Olsson could expect a rather large cohort! We can only hope he releases the teachings online for the rest of us.
The tweets have been gaining traction over the last few days and have clearly reached the feeds of the game’s stars. Samantha Strelitz has already offered to chat with Olsson (and later confirmed they had spoken) which could add a really interesting element to the class. Who knows who else may get in touch before classes start in August.
