Sony says PS5 restocks are slowly picking up, but it will be a long time before supply can match demand.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan gave the lowdown. In addition to speaking about the upcoming PS5 VR System, he talked at length about the console shortage.
As is well known, both Microsoft‘s Xbox Series and Sony‘s PS5 have been difficult to find since launching last November. This has led to a spree of scalping, particularly of PS5 restocks. It’s even reached the point that British MPs have called for a legal ban on the practice.
As Ryan explained, the main reason for the shortage is the disruption to supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Semiconductors are a vital component of game consoles, but also smartphones and cars. With all of these industries competing for stock, it’s no wonder supplies are short.
But there are signs that things are finally changing. “We’re working as we always have,” Ryan promised. “But with renewed vigour and energy post Christmas to get supply up, it will increase as each month passes.”
According to Slashgear, Ryan also told the Financial Times that “it will get better with every month throughout 2021.” He added that:
The pace of the improvement in the supply chain will gather throughout the course of the year, so by the time we get to the second half of , you’re going to be seeing really decent numbers indeed.Quote Source
While that’s the good news, the bad news is that supply will not match demand for some time yet. PS5 restocks will continue to be slim, and people hoping to pick up a console by this year’s holidays may still be out of luck. “There are very few magic wands that can be waved,” Ryan said.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the Amazon listings for the PS5 here. Amazon usually gets a sizeable amount of restock whenever reports of retailers getting a new wave of PS5 stock happen.
