While I would normally say to put your camp wherever you want, Fallout 76 punishes players for not paying attention to this. If you place it close to enemies like bandits or Super Mutants, you will be regularly invaded by them. Plus, if you do not have a good amount of essential resources nearby, you will have a difficult time running the camp.

  1. Defensibility: Ensure your camp is in a location that’s easy to defend, with no nearby enemies.

  2. Distance from Fast Travel Points: Since you can fast travel to your camp, place it further away from other fast travel points to maximize its utility.

  3. Walking Distance: Opt for a location that requires some walking to reach, making your camp more valuable for fast travel.

  4. Flat Terrain: Find a flat or mostly even ground to avoid difficulties when expanding your camp.

Now that you are aware of a few things to keep in mind when building a camp, let’s take a look at the best Base Camp locations for it.

Lakeside Grill – Toxic Valley

Most Reliable Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
The Lakeside Grill diner in all its glory

Why Do I Prefer Lakeside Grill?

The Lakeside Grill gives you a natural setting with a quaint 60s diner right in the middle of the setting.

Starting with the number 10 entry on my list, the Lakeside Grill. This place provides a natural shelter in the shape of the 60s themed diner. However, you’ll want to build your walls and structures to be more secure. because Ghouls are lurking nearby. I suggest clearing them out so that you can have the place to yourself. Keep in mind that you can still get attacked even after you clear out the enemies but that is rare.

The good part about this place is that you have tons of access to water, materials, food, and shelter. You can even salvage the docks nearby to get more resources. However, since this area is in the Toxic Valley, you won’t be able to set up proper border defenses.

In short, these are the things that make Lakeside Grill a great area to make your camp at:

  • Good resources
  • Already built shelter
  • Access to water
  • Useful areas nearby

  • Ample supply of resources.
  • Has a shelter built in the form of a diner.
  • Adequate access to water.

  • You need to fortify your structures and walls to be more secure.

Gilman Lumber Mill – Appalachia’s Forest

Best for Beginners.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
Gilman Lumber Mill is a great place for starters

Why Do I Prefer Gilman Lumber Mill?

Gilman Lumber Mill is suitable for beginners, as it provides a secure and suitable location for you to set up camp.

This is a great camp location as it provides a good shelter that is secured and has all the basic needs. The fence around the perimeter also offers decent protection but you should start building your walls to make them more secure. Plus, this location is quite safe regardless of whether you make a wall or not. There are no enemies nearby – at least not any major ones – and you have tons of supply of wood – with it being a lumber mill and all.

The place itself is situated in Appalachia’s Forest area. As you might already know, that region is ideal for starters as it does not require a high level. On top of that, you have access to a lot of flat areas so building structures is not an issue.

Here are all the positives summed up:

  • Flat area to build on
  • No nearby enemies
  • Ideal for starters
  • Free supply of wood
  • Good shelter in the shape of the mill itself

  • Suitable for beginners as it doesn’t require a high level.
  • You won’t find many enemies nearby.
  • Provides a lot of flat area to build structures on.

  • You will need to build structures to protect yourself, as the fence isn’t secure enough.

Raider Shack – Hemlock Holes

Best Hilly Campsite.
Hemlock Holes is a good place to set up your camp at

Why Do I Prefer Raider Shack?

Raider Shack not only provides you with a secure and stable shelter, but also gives you a clear view of the surroundings, so you can prepare for oncoming enemies.

The Raiders Shack in Hemlock Holes has a good view of the surroundings and provides great intel on the crashed space station. If you make your way up on the hills, you will come across some of the best houses in Fallout 76. Oftentimes, players are not aware of this location as it is quite secluded. Another major plus point of this area is that you will not have to build a Tinker’s Bench as it already has one. Plus, it also has a cooking pot!

However, you can sometimes find Super Mutants lurking around so be careful. You can always place turrets or clear them out yourself to make life easier. Having a good Power Armor like the Ultracite Armor can go a long way in clearing out these enemies.

These are all the selling points of this location:

  • Premade Tinker’s Bench
  • Cooking Pot
  • Great for defensive set ups
  • Good travel point
  • Ample shelter nearby
  • Tons of Raider’s loot
  • It even has a bed

  • Provides a good view of the surroundings.
  • Also gives intel on the crashed space station.
  • Comes with a premade Tinker’s Bench.

  • Super Mutants are often lurking around, so you need to be careful.

The Seneca Rock Bridge – Seneca Rocks

Most Challenging Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
The beautiful Seneca Rocks in Fallout 76

Why Do I Prefer The Seneca Rock Bridge?

The Seneca Rock Bridge is quite difficult to find, and even more difficult to set up camp in. However, it provides you with the best protection as well.

Located between the Pleasant Valley Cabins and the beautiful Seneca Rocks, you’ll rarely find players building their Fallout 76 camps here. While you might think that building here will be impossible or difficult – and you’re right to an extent, you can get great protection. Since access to this area is quite limited, enemies can only come from a few directions. Also, there are a few rivers here so you get free water access.

Apart from that, it is also a great travel point, especially if you are in the mid-game. It will save you a lot of hassle and travel time when going to mid-game locations or quests. Also, there aren’t a lot of enemies here due to the elevated position of the Seneca Rocks.

Some of the key features include:

  • Free water access
  • Easy to defend
  • Convenient mid game location

  • One of the most secure spots.
  • Free water access from the rivers.
  • Also a great travel point.

  • You may have to set up everything from scratch.

Morgantown Trainyard – Morgantown

Best Trainyard Campsite.
The abandoned Morgantown Trainyard

Why Do I Prefer Morgantown Trainyard?

The Morgantown Trainyard is packed with resources that could be of help when you’re seeking shelter, and it also allows you to trade goods with other players.

This trainyard is located at an ideal place as almost all essential resources are close by. To the West of the Trainyard, you have the Appalachia’s Forest – where the Gilman Lumber Mill is. You can also find a river in the Forest which makes it easier to get water. On top of that, there are station vendors in the Trainyard which makes it easier to trade and sell stuff such as ammo.

That’s not all though, you even have access to a stash chest that lets you store tons of loot for free. However, there are a few negatives as well. You do not have privacy at this location as it is quite popular and is situated near the airport and Vault 76. This also means that you’ll have two fast travel points next to each other. With that said, I believe the positives outweigh the negatives.

The major good things include:

  • Free water access
  • Extra stash chest for storing loot
  • Perfect for trading
  • Easy to access public events

  • Has a stash chest where you can loot stuff for free.
  • Has a nearby river from where you can get unlimited water.
  • Has two fast travel points nearby: the airport and Vault 76.

  • There is no privacy at the trainyard.

The Noose Tree – Toxic Valley

Best for Creative Players.
The horrifying sight of the Noose Tree

Why Do I Prefer The Noose Tree?

The Noose Tree looks quite horrifying, but you can use to your advantage by building the most haunting campsite you can think of.

This place looks straight out of a horror movie and it might not be suitable for everyone. However, if the noose on a tree does not bother you, this is a great – and unique – location for you to set up your camp at. First of all, it is almost at the center of most things like quests or other points of interest. Secondly, if you are a fan of creative building, you can design a camp that has a haunted theme to it.

Finally, the terrain is flat so you won’t have trouble expanding your base in any direction.

  • Easy to access various locations.
  • Tons of resources and loot nearby.
  • Water is also available nearby.

  • Not suitable for people looking for availability of shelter and resources.

Mole Miner Tunnel -Savage Divide

Best High Ground Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
The Mole Miner Tunnel is easy to defend against threats

Why Do I Prefer Mole Miller Tunnel?

The Mole Miller Tunnel is a strategic point in Fallout 76, and it gives you plenty of resources to build a campsite and shelters for your protection.

The exact location where you will be building your camp is called the Savage Divide. It is near the Mole Miner Tunnel and Sunnytop Station. At this place, you will have high ground and access to the train station. Oh, and did I mention that you have an ample supply of lead here as well? Building your camp at this location can be a strategic choice at it is a great fast travel point since it is further away from other points of interest.

However, there is a major issue so keep that in mind when building your base here. You will not have access to water in this area. There is no water nearby either. Plus, since it is not a central location, you will have to walk a lot to get to various quests.

  • Supply of lead.
  • Near a train station.
  • Easy to defend.

  • No supply of water nearby.

EL-B1-02 Relay Tower – Savage Divide

Best Strategic Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
EL-B1-02 Relay Tower is a superb place to build your camp at

Why Do I Prefer EL-B1-02 Relay Tower?

The EL-B1-02 Relay Tower is one of the finest choices for a campsite, because it is well-secluded and comes with ample supply of resources and materials.

Another location in the Savage Divide, the EL-B1-02 Relay Tower is one of the best camp locations in Fallout 76. This site has access to water, food, resources, and is convenient to defend. Since the place is half surrounded by a cliff, you will only have to defend the camp from one direction. Not only that but this place is also secluded so you won’t get that many visitors which – in an apocalyptic world – is a good thing.

Plus, the ground is mostly flat so you won’t have a problem building at all. There is also an extraction site nearby and that is always good to have if you need rare resources or minerals.

  • Flat surface
  • Water access
  • Food access

  • Only one resident can protect the campsite.

Lake on the Mountain – Thunder Mountain

Most Peaceful Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
Lake on the Mountain is a peaceful location

Why Do I Prefer Lake on the Mountain?

The Lake on the Mountain is quite popular among Fallout 76 players, and allows players to fortify their campsite by building shelters.

Situated to the East of our previous location – the Relay Tower, the lake on top of Thunder Mountain is a surprisingly popular and extremely peaceful location. The lake is shallow enough for players to build their structures on, so you can utilize a lot of space. There is little to no enemy spawn in this location, so you will be rather peaceful when staying here.

The best part is that this location is a reasonable distance from most of the end-game content, like Watoga or Berkley. Plus, it has a good source of dirt and water for growing crops and getting free food for as long as you like. To add the cherry on top, the lake on the mountain is scenic and looks like a spot straight out of a fairy tale.

  • Easy access to food, water, and dirt
  • Ample space to build on
  • Located at a good spot for late-game activities

  • Many enemies can find their way here.

Whitespring Golf Course – Whitespring

Best Campsite.
Fallout 76 Best Camp Locations
This area provides ample security against enemies

Why Do I Prefer Whitespring Golf Course?

The Whitespring Golf Course is laden with resources and has a green, serene environment, along with a chance for you to enjoy golf.

Finally, my number one pick for the best camp location is Fallout 76 is the Whitespring Golf Course. First and foremost, the best part about this location is its security. Some NPCs roam around in this area to fend off enemy attacks. The location also provides easy access to late-game supplies for you to stock up on. Also, needless to say, you have tons of space to build your camp on since it is a whole golf course. Being a golf course, the surface is flat, so you won’t have a problem.

However, the major problem with this area is its popularity. Since it is considered a central location, you won’t have your privacy here as tons of players will be roaming around and building their base as well. Despite its flaws, this location is still my pick as it offers everything the other locations did and more.

  • Tons of space to build on
  • Access to almost every resource – rare or otherwise
  • Primary location, which means vendors will be easily accessible

  • It can be quite costly.

Why Other Camp Locations Were Not Chosen

Here are some campsites that didn’t cut:

  • East of The Wayward: Requires considerable investment in building materials and resources.
  • Missile Silo Alpha: There is a risk of theft since it is a high-theft area.
  • Forest Alcove: No immediate access to water.
  • Abandoned Monongah Raider Base: No easy access to water, and not very secure.
  • Tyler County Dirt Track: You may have to invest in building structures.
  • Aluminum Camp – Savage Divide: It may be frequented by enemies since it has Vault 79 nearby.
  • Southwestern Area – Savage Divide: Can be challenging to set up camp, since it is quite remote.
  • The Mire: You won’t frequently visit this site much post-mid-game.
  • North of Helvetia – The Forest: It is frequented by many players and enemies.
  • Cranberry Bog: It is crowded, so your campsite may fall in someone’s blast zone.

My Recommendation

That about does it for my guide about the Fallout 76 Camp Locations. I hope that this guide assisted you in choosing the ideal place to set up your base and start roaming the Wasteland of Fallout 76. My personal favorite is Seneca Rock Bridge – not only is it highly secure, but I love the challenge of setting up my base in a location where I’d need to hunt for resources.
