Counterplay Games is, perhaps, most acclaimed for its recently released action RPG for PC and PlayStation consoles, Godfall, which was released back in November 2020. Since the release of Godfall, there have been a few speculations about the company working on another game and it seems like we finally have more information on exactly what it may be.
Earlier today, we came across a few job listings that were recently posted on the Counterplay Games website. One of the job listings is for the Producer position at Counterplay Games, the description for which reads, “Counterplay Games needs a Producer to manage the development of an unannounced cooperative action fantasy shooter.” Of course, this isn’t the first time this unannounced game has been hinted at. In December 2021, a job listing for the Senior World / Level / Mission Content Producer position at Counterplay Games hinted at the same “cooperative action fantasy shooter.” However, it was unclear whether this was an unannounced game at the time, but we now know for a certainty.
Besides this, another recent job listing for the Senior Writer position at Counterplay Games also mentions that the company is, in fact, working on a completely new IP, the description for which reads, “The Narrative team at Counterplay Games is looking for a full-time senior writer that will contribute to the overall narrative of a new IP.“ So, it’s clear that this upcoming game is not a sequel to Godfall.
Furthermore, another recent job listing on the company’s website for the Animation Programmer position at Counterplay Games gives us some more insight about this unannounced cooperative action fantasy shooter, the description for which mentions, “Our next game is heavily combat-focused, so the ideal candidate must adore 3D action combat games and action RPGs.” So, it’s clear that the upcoming game will be an action RPG with a heavy focus on combat. In addition to this, one of the requirements for the job listing is “previous experience with implementing 3rd person player characters,” which suggests that the unannounced game, like Godfall, will be a third-person one.
However, this is not all. One of the pluses that the candidate could have mentions “experience with multiplayer animation and/or multiplayer gameplay programming,” so it seems like the upcoming game from Counterplay Games will have both a single-player and multiplayer experience to it, similar to Godfall. Additionally, it also states, “experience with developing synchronized multi-character animations (assassinations) is a plus,” which suggests that, while the unannounced cooperative action fantasy shooter is heavily focused on combat, there may be a stealth aspect to it as well (as hinted by “assassinations”).
Additionally, it also seems like, unlike Godfall, this unannounced game will not be exclusive to PC and PlayStation consoles only, as another recent job listing on the company’s website is for the Next-Gen Platform Engineer, the description for which reads, “Counterplay Games is looking for a Next-Gen Platform Engineer responsible for platform development for our PC and Console AAA video game.” However, the job listing doesn’t mention a particular console platform. Furthermore, one of the responsibilities for the candidate mentions “next-gen console platform development,” so not only will the upcoming game be released on next-generation consoles but it also may not be exclusive to PlayStation consoles only this time.
For now, this is all the information we have on this unannounced cooperative action fantasy shooter from Counterplay Games. Hopefully, with time, the company releases further news regarding this upcoming new game, as it seems very promising. With the recent release of Godfall: Challenger Edition in December 2021, we can’t wait to see what the company comes up with next.
