Avalanche Studios Group, the developer behind the Just Cause franchise and Mad Max, announced its upcoming cooperative heist game being published by Xbox Game Studios, Contraband, back in June 2021 during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2021. However, since then, not much has been revealed about the game by either Avalanche Studios Group or Xbox Game Studios. On the contrary, accredited industry insiders do claim that the game is scheduled to release in 2023.
While players anxiously awaited the release of Contraband, it was revealed that Avalanche Studios Group is working on its “next cutting edge AAA open-world game,” through a job listing for the company on LinkedIn. While many players claimed this to be Contraband, it seems like that isn’t the case, and this may actually be an unannounced project, as found by a recent job listing on the company’s website, alongside other details about what this project could be.
Earlier today, we came across a recent job listing on the Avalanche Studio Group website for the Platform Programmer position at the company’s Malmö studio based in Sweden, the description for which reads, “We are looking to hire a senior programmer to develop and maintain platform specific features for our unannounced AAA project.” From this, it’s clear that the company does have another project in development (unannounced), and it’s certainly not Contraband.
Furthermore, the description also states, “Making cutting edge, multi-platform, open world games you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of different systems including streaming, threading, memory management, platform and middleware abstractions and more,” which means that this unannounced project may as well be the “next cutting edge AAA open-world game,” that the company is currently working on.
However, this isn’t all, as one of the responsibilities of the candidate mentioned in the job listing reveals some intriguing details about this “unannounced AAA project” from Avalanche Studios Group. “Develop features that include profile management and savegames, leaderboards, achievements, online multiplayer frontend, DLC, user generated content, social media integration, and handling platform specific peripherals and input devices,” it states.
Based on this, it can be inferred that this unannounced project may be an online multiplayer one and will likely include expansions, which is common for online multiplayer games. Furthermore, the job listing also mentions “user generated content,” suggesting that there may be a sandbox mode in the game as well. Additionally, the requirements from the candidate mentioned in the job listing also suggest that this unannounced project may be multi-platform.
“Experience programming with recent generation PC and modern console APIs,” it mentions. “Experienced with console development across multiple platforms.” From this, it’s evident that this unannounced project will not only be multi-platform but, unlike Contraband, won’t likely be restricted to one console platform only.
Unfortunately, these are all the details we have about this “unannounced AAA project” from Avalanche Studios Group at the moment. With time, more details will likely be unveiled by the company itself. However, it seems like the project is currently in its early stages of development, so nothing definite can be said about it.
