Rundown:

  • Riot Games could possibly be working on an unannounced AAA online multiplatform player-versus-player franchise based on the first-person shooter genre.
  • The unannounced project is in its early stages of development, and may be released on both PC and mobile devices.
  • The unannounced project will be based on Unreal Engine, and may also feature a narrative experience.

When it comes to the first-person tactical shooter genre, VALORANT is one of the most widely recognised video games in the video game community. While many players criticise it for being a replication of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, there’s no denying that VALORANT has gathered an extensive player base in recent months, with the video game now expected to be released on mobile devices soon. In March, we found that Riot Games had an unannounced AAA online competitive console project in development, which has now been presumed to be VALORANT for console platforms. However, this isn’t the only project the company may have under development, as recent job listings suggest an unannounced online multiplatform franchise based on the first-person shooter genre.

Riot Games is one of the world’s most critically and commercially acknowledged video game companies. Being a subsidiary of the multinational technology and entertainment conglomerate and holding company based in China, Tencent, Riot Games has released some of the most noteworthy video game franchises, like League of Legends and VALORANT, in the video game community. Hence, it is no surprise that the company has many other projects, both announced and unannounced, currently under development, including Project L, an assist-based fighter video game set in the world of Runeterra.

Earlier today, we came across a few recent job listings on the Riot Games website, one of which is for the Principal Concept Artist position at the company’s headquarters based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States; the description for which reads, “As a Principal Concept Artist on the Research & Development team, you’ll work on a brand new unpublished AAA game.” It further reads, “You’ll partner with the Art Director to help build foundational ideas and character concepts. You will also work collaboratively with designers, writers, and producers to bring new worlds and characters to life.” From this, the company certainly has an unannounced AAA project currently under development.

Furthermore, this unannounced project also seems to be a new franchise, as one of the desired qualifications from the candidate mentions, “Experience working with new IP.” However, it’s currently unclear as to what this new franchise could be. Additionally, this unannounced project may also be based on Unreal Engine, the same as VALORANT, as another one of the desired qualifications from the candidate mentions, “Experience working with 3D tools such as Maya, Zbrush, and Unreal.”

However, this isn’t all, as another recent job listing for the Principal Game Designer, Combat position at the company’s headquarters based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States, provides a few details regarding the genre that this unannounced project could be based on; the description for which reads, “As a Game Designer, you will design and optimize the player experience. Your analytical skills, player insight, and creativity help craft in- and out-of-game experiences that engage and surprise players. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and work with every tool at hand to create innovative, player-focused designs that’ll delight millions around the world.  Working on an early stage product, you will help decipher one of Riot’s next big bets.”

It further reads, “As a Principal Game Designer specializing in core gameplay on the R&D team, you excel in designing Mechanics and Systems for first-person combat experiences. You partner with other designers, artists, and engineers to create and iterate on a variety of PvP features ranging from player movement, abilities, weapons, to hit reaction systems.” Hence, it’s clear from this that this unannounced project will be based on the first-person player-versus-player genre, specifically the first-person shooter one.

Additionally, one of the required qualifications from the candidate mentions, “Shipped or worked on at least one AAA+ online game,” suggesting that this unannounced project will be an online multiplayer one. “3+ years of experience in either Combat Mechanics or Combat Feel – FPS Specialization,” reads another one of the required qualifications from the candidate, which corroborates that this unannounced project is, in fact, a first-person shooter one.

Another recent job listing on the Riot Games website is for the Manager, Character Art position at the company’s headquarters based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States; one of the desired qualifications from the candidate for which reads, “Experience in both PC and mobile games.” Hence, this suggests that this unannounced project will be a multiplatform one and will be released not only on PC but on mobile devices as well.

Lastly, it seems like this unannounced project may also feature a narrative experience, as another recent job listing on the Riot Games website is for the Senior Animation Artist position at the company’s headquarters based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States; one of the required qualifications from the candidate for which reads, “Excellent understanding of body mechanics, acting, posing and storytelling techniques.”

Based on all the details provided by the company’s recent job listings, it’s clear that Riot Games is currently working on a project similar to VALORANT — a competitive first-person tactical shooter. However, since it’s seemingly a new franchise, it’s unlikely that this will be a spin-off based on VALORANT (or even a sequel). However, it seems to be a major project for the company, as it calls it one of its “next big bets.” Since this unannounced project is still in its pre-production stages, it will be a while before the company officially announces further details about it. Only time will tell whether this unannounced project is related to VALORANT in any way or will succeed the franchise.
