Firstly, you don’t get to choose who is a part of your party. Consequently, your party is decided by the progression of the game’s story. Sometimes, you won’t even have party members. This is how the party system in Final Fantasy IV functioned.
Key Takeaways
- Final Fantasy 16 has adopted a new party system to previous installments in the series.
- You cannot select and choose your Party members.
- Your party members can be staggered and knocked back. However, they can’t die, and they can’t level up.
- Your pet wolf, Torgal, is the unique party member over whom you have some autonomy.
- Pressing Left on the D-pad lets you switch to Torgal’s Input Menu. Consequently, you can perform Sics, Precision Sics, Punishing Sics, Cures, and Ravages.
- Equipping the Ring of Timely Assistance Accessory removes your control over Torgal.
- 3 members besides Clive can be your party members. They are Torgal, Cidolfus Telamon, and Jill Warrick.
I have played Final Fantasy 16 for more than 70+ hours, and my PSN Tag is SHiNiGaMii. I have played the game extensively, so you can easily trust the hands-on experience I bring!
Secondly, unlike Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy 16 doesn’t allow you to control the actions of your party members. Consequently, you can’t control what your party members do or their load-outs. This is also good as you don’t have to worry about healing or leveling them as they can’t be killed, and their stats are out of your control.
The Final Fantasy series has an ever-changing Party System. The system, this time, seems only to let you control Clive. However, there is one exception: your pet wolf, Torgal.
Controlling Torgal
Your pet wolf, Torgal, is the only party member you can control. All you need to do to control Torgal is press Left on the D-pad, which changes the Consumables Menu to Torgal’s Menu. This allows you to control Torgal in the following ways.
Input (on D-pad) | Action | Description |
---|---|---|
Up | Sic | Torgal performs a standard attack on a locked-on target or any other enemy. Furthermore, it can also be transitioned into a Precision Sic or Punishing Sic. |
Right | Cure | Torgal casts a healing spell that will slowly regenerate Clive's recoverable damage. The gray color in the health bar signifies recoverable damage. |
Down | Ravage | Torgal will perform a crowd-control attack. This launches the selected target or a group of enemies into the air or onto the floor. |
Torgal Controls Table
Notably, Torgal will perform these moves regardless of your input. I added my manual inputs, and you can choose that too.
Alternatively, suppose you don’t want to control Torgal at all. In that case, you can equip the Ring of Timely Assistance Accessory, which makes Torgal’s A.I. more competent at the cost of your autonomy.
Finally, Torgal is the only Party Member who can level up with you throughout the story, as indicated by his Pedigree in the Attributes menu.
Possible Party Members
Currently, there are only a total of 4 characters who can be party members. You may see this number increase with the introduction of DLC characters.
Name | Description |
---|---|
Clive | The main character is whom you have absolute control over. |
Torgal | Your pet wolf, who you have partial control over. |
Cidolfus Telamon | Cid is one of the incarnations of the classic Final Fantasy character. Furthermore, he's also a Dominant of the Eikon Ramuh. |
Jill Warrick | One of Clive's contemporaries is also a Dominant of the Eikon Shiva. |
All Party Members Table.
What Would I Recommend?
I think Torgal is the ideal choice to go for as a party member in your playthrough. Or at least the first few playthroughs, as our furry friend greatly assists throughout the tough battles in the game.
In the end, you can try out other members as well after professional playthroughs and you will also notice major difference in the abilities that bring to your playthrough.
That concludes the guide for the Best Party in Final Fantasy 16. The short answer is there is no Best Party because you have no control over this system. If you enjoyed this article, you can check out my other coverages for Final Fantasy 16.
