Cyberpunk 2077 Has Lost 79% Of It’s Steam Player Base In A Month

The unprecedentedly controversial Cyberpunk 2077 has lost 79% of its Steam player base in just under a month since its release.

The news comes from games statistics website Githyp. They had this to say about the game’s stats:
“When Cyberpunk 2077 launched a little over 3 weeks ago, it became the first single-player game ever to break 1 million concurrent players on Steam. But over this past weekend, Cyberpunk continued its decline, struggling to peak at 225k players.

The news appears particularly concerning when compared to the company’s previous game The Witcher 3 – the title that made them a household name in the industry.
Githyp reported that The Witcher 3 retained over half its player base a month in at 55k, taking a further three months before it lost the same as Cyberpunk has currently. (Get the best deals on The Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition here or through Amazon.)
Githyp analysts stated that games “typically lose around the same amount of players, if not even more, after their first month on Steam.” But that “Open-world games like Cyberpunk are usually the exception,

It seems that despite strong efforts to patch the game and those updates being an overall success, the game’s buggy launch state still had a huge effect.

Even still, the game’s sales remained impressive. Despite the backlash, CD Projekt Red still managed to sell thirteen million copies at launch. With eight million pre-orders, and a further five million purchased the game irrespective of its issues.
The company is, however, currently facing a class-action lawsuit filed by New York firm Rosen Law. The suit was filed on behalf of investors who had purchased stock in CD Projekt Red and aimed to recover damages for them. CD Projekt Red spoke on the claims, stating that:
“The Company will undertake vigorous action to defend itself against any such claims,”

Of course, there was also Sony, who pulled the game from the PlayStation store.
Its likely that news on the topic of Cyberpunk 2077 will remain hot for some time. The question of the overall longevity and reputation of the company following Cyberpunk’s tumultuous launch, however, is yet to be sealed. (Get Cyberpunk 2077 for only $36 !! here or here )
