Legendary Items Explained
In Diablo 4, items are categorized into five tiers: Common, Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique.
Legendary items in Diablo 4 are intriguing because they have a maximum of 5 Affixes, with 4 being regular Affixes and the fifth being a Legendary Affix. These Legendary Affixes are notably more powerful than regular Affixes.
What’s interesting is that the Legendary Affixes are randomly rolled, adding an element of unpredictability to the game. This means you can’t predict exactly what you’ll get when using a Legendary item, making the game more exciting.
However, it’s worth noting that the affixes are not entirely random. Some affixes are exclusive to specific item types. For example, certain affixes only appear on Amulets, while others are unique to Chest Armor. This pattern extends to other item types like Gloves and Pants, adding complexity to itemization and gameplay.
Types of Legendary Items
Although all Legendary items feature practically the same qualities, there are three different types of Legendary items in Diablo 4:
Legendary Items
These are regular Legendary items that feature affixes that are more powerful than others. However, they are not as powerful as the other two types of items.
Sacred Legendary Items
Sacred Legendary items are typically more powerful than Diablo 4 Legendaries in all aspects. But perhaps the most notable difference is that they feature better Legendary Affixes that dominate the battlefield. The only way to get these items is to reach a very high level in-game and wait for them to drop.
Ancestral Legendary Items
Ancestral Legendary items, the third type of Legendary item, are more powerful than any other type. These are extreme endgame items that can only be found when you reach the final levels in the game. If you do find one, however, it will take the place of your regular Legendary and Sacred gear.
Legendary Aspects Explained
Another part of using Diablo 4 Legendaries is the system of Legendary Aspects. Every Legendary item has a Legendary aspect. You will need to meet with the Occultist to remove these Aspects from the item. This will essentially destroy the item and you will be left with the Aspect.
After you have extracted the Apsect, it can be then applied to a Legendary or Rare item, in a process called Imprinting. When you Imprint a Legendary Aspect on a Rare item, the item automatically becomes Legendary. But if you Imprint a Legendary Aspect on a Legendary item, the previous Aspect gets replaced.
Legendary Aspects are of 5 categories. These categories divide what weapons you can Imprint the Aspects on. Here’s a summary of the various Aspect categories and the gear you can Imprint them on:
- Defensive: Pants, Chest, Amulet, Helm, Off-Hand (50% Power Increase)
- Utility: Gloves, Amulet, Helm, Boots, Chest (50% Power Increase)
- Mobility: Amulet and Boots (50% Power Increase)
- Offensive: 1H (One-Handed) and 2H (Two-Handed) Weapons, Gloves (100% Power Increase), Amulet, and Ring (50% Power Increase)
- Resource: Amulet, Ring, Helm (50% Power Increase)
So, how many Legendary Aspects are there? Several. The developers have confirmed that there are near to 120 different Aspects. Hence, listing all of them would be exhaustive. And it’s always fun to explore the game yourself.
Legendary Affixes Explained
Legendary Affixes replace the regular Affixes on your gear and are generally more powerful than regular Affixes. Diablo 4 Legendaries are basically Rare Items with a Legendary Affix replacing at least one regular Affix.
However, much like regular Affixes, you’re not in much control of when these Affixes roll or in what slots they go. Instead, Affix rolling and slot assignment are random. Additionally, some of these Affixes can be used by any class. But some are specific to certain gear classes.
Here’s a list of all the different Legendary Affixes you can possibly get:
Any Class
- Additional damage to Knocked Down enemies.
- Defensive skills last longer by a certain percentage.

Final Thoughts
Diablo 4 introduces the concept of Legendaires, these all-powerful weapons that are unique and will dominate any enemy on the battlefield. Diablo 4 Legendaries are extremely resourceful not only because of the damage they deal but also the buffs they provide.
Moreover, Legendary items come with Legendary Affixes granting them special abilities in battle. These Affixes can be extracted as Aspects and be used to upgrade Rare weapons or modify Legendary ones.
All in all, this game mechanism is quite unique to the Diablo series. And we hope to see more of it in the near future.
