Starfield BEST Religion [Definitive Guide]

There are 3 Religions in Starfield with a unique variety of social-cultural systems, such as prescribed behaviors and practices, values, beliefs, worldviews, books, holy sites, prophesies, ethics, or institutions, just like real life.

Each of these Religions gives you different missions, and the dialogue options for each Religion are pretty distinctive in the path it takes you. Furthermore, depending on your Religion, you may affect your relationships with other Factions in Starfield. You should be careful and manage your relationships with other Religions as well.

As I have clarified, there is only one religion you can pick out of the 3 options. So, picking the best one makes sense, and in my opinion, that happens to be the Serpent’s Embrace Religion, also called House Va’ruun.

I will justify my choice below, along with a comprehensive explanation of each Religion so you can have confidence in my pick for the Best Religion.

Enlightened Religion

Best Religion for Lore.

“You grew up as a member of the Enlightened. You gain access to a special chest full of items in the House of the Enlightened in New Atlantis but lose access to the Sanctum Universum chest.”

The Enlightened are atheists who reject the idea of a supreme being. Their capital is found in the House of the Enlightened in New Atlantis.

They advocate the idea that people need to look out for one another. To disseminate their teachings throughout the Settled Systems, the Enlightened designed and oversaw several charitable and community outreach initiatives.

Like the Universal Religion, picking the Enlightened Religion lets you access a chest full of books and other goodies.

Here is how you get to that Chest:

1. Head to New Atlantis and make your way to the Spaceport District.
2. Find a sign that says Terrabrew Coffee, then look for an elevator nearby.
3. Enter the Well, which will take you to the path to the House of the Enlightened.
4. In this next area, pass an NPC named Andy Singh and enter a hallway.
5. Take a left; you should find the Chest next to a whiteboard.

This Chest has some valuable items, such as the Settler Poncho Outfit, but nothing stellar. These don’t have anything game-changing in them.

You can ignore these entirely unless you’re very early into the game or interested in the lore behind the Enlightened Religion. Regardless, the Chest contains the following items:

Universal Religion

Best Religion for a Cosmic & Spiritual Narrative Experience.

“You grew up as a member of the Sanctum Universum. You gain access to a unique chest of items in the Sanctum Universum in New Atlantis but lose access to the House of the Enlightened Chest.”

The Universal Religion is also known as the Sanctum Universum Religion. It is one of the most recent faiths to emerge among people, having only been around for 20 years, yet it has experienced significant growth in that short period. Universalists’ central tenet is that God exists somewhere in the cosmos and is leading people to find Him.

Furthermore, Universalists claim that humanity’s development of the Grav Drive, which makes it possible to travel between stars, proves this divine direction and God’s wish to be discovered.

Like the House of the Enlightened, you can find their capital in the Sanctum Universum in New Atlantis.

Also, similarly to the Enlightened Religion, picking the Universal Religion lets you access a chest full of books and other loot.

Here is how you get to that Chest:

1. Head to New Atlantis and make your way to the MAST District.
2. Keep going straight from the NAT Transit Ramp while looking for a specific Door.
3. You can find the door by looking at the golden architecture around it.
4. Enter through the door and find the Chest outside Keeper Aquilius’ Office.

This Chest has some valuable items, such as the Festive Neocity Poncho, but nothing remarkable. Just like the Enlightened Chest, there is nothing game-changing here. You can also probably ignore this chest if it is too much of a hassle.

Hence, this isn’t the Best Religion to go for either. Regardless, the Chest contains the following items:

Serpent’s Embrace Religion

Best Religion for Adventurers, providing Mystical Edge & Lasting Benefits.

“You grew up worshiping the Great Serpent. Grav jumping temporarily boosts health and oxygen, but health and oxygen are lowered if you don’t continue jumping regularly – like an addiction.”

Origin & Legends:

• Legends suggest that the cult was founded on a colony ship during a grav jump.
• A colonist claimed to have a conversation with an entity known as the Great Serpent, leading to the foundation of the religion.
• Descendants of the travelers on the colony ship identified themselves as House Va’ruun.
• Jinan Va’ruun, a theocratic leader, initiated the Serpent’s Crusade against other human societies.
• House Va’ruun eventually disappeared from the Settled Systems.

Legacy:

• Remnants of House Va’ruun, known as Va’ruun Zealots, continue to exist in the Settled Systems.
• The capital of House Va’ruun is in Voss, Alpha Centauri.

Religious Benefits:

• Grav Jumping provides an additional 25 Health and 25 Oxygen.
• Not grav jumping for 4 hours results in decreased Health and Oxygen.

Advantages:

• The Serpent’s Embrace Religion offers permanent buffs that remain useful throughout the entire game.
• Grav jumping is a common activity in Starfield, making the associated drawback generally negligible.

Conclusion:

• This religion is considered the best choice among the available options due to its long-term benefits and relevance throughout the game, making it a valuable choice for players.

How To Join A Religion

1. Play the game until you discover the Artifact and wake up from blacking out.
2. An NPC will ask you if you remember who you are. Then, you can access the Character Creation Menu.
3. Here, you will get to customize your character’s appearance and background.
4. However, we are concerned with our character’s Traits, so move to the Traits tab.
5. Here, you can select a variety of traits. All of them are optional, so if you want not to pick a Religion, either pick non-religious traits or don’t pick any traits.
6. You can pick 3 Religious Traits: Raised Enlightened, Raised Universal, and Serpent’s Embrace.
7. Pick any of them and pick 2 other non-religious traits, or press the button on the bottom right to finish your character creation.

If you picked a Religious Trait, you would’ve officially joined a Religion. After becoming familiar with the game’s mechanics, you can engage in Religion-specific missions and pursue Religion-specific storylines later in the game.

How To Leave A Religion?

If, for whatever reason, you decide to leave or withdraw from your selected Religion, there is a way to do so. However, once you leave a Religion, you can no longer join it again or choose a different Religion.

It would be best if you took some time to consider this since it’s a one-and-done deal. 

Enlightened Religion Withdrawal Steps

1. Head to New Atlantis and enter the House of the Enlightened.
2. Find the NPC, Andy Singh, and talk to him.
3. Select the [Raised Enlightened] Option, ‘I’m not sure I want to be part of the Enlightened anymore.’

Universal Religion Withdrawal Steps

1. Head to New Atlantis and enter the Sanctum Universum.
2. Find the NPC, Keeper Aquilius, and talk to him.
3. Select the [Raised Universal] Option, ‘I know I was raised in the sanctum. But I’m not sure if I believe anymore.’

House Va’ruun Withdrawal Steps

1. Head to New Atlantis and make your way to the Spaceport District.
2. Here, you should find the UC Security Building and head inside.
3. Find the NPC, Mir’za, and talk to her.
4. Select the [Serpent’s Embrace] Option, ‘I’m having a crisis of faith. There’s not many people I can talk to about it.’

What Would I Recommend?

After extensive exploration, I strongly recommend embracing the Serpent’s Embrace Religion. This choice not only unfolds a captivating narrative with the cult of the Great Serpent but also offers practical benefits through grav jumping, providing a significant boost of 25 Health and 25 Oxygen.

Despite the drawback of reduced health and oxygen after 4 hours without grav jumping, the overall impact is manageable, given the commonality of this activity in the game.

The unique narrative, rooted in a colony ship’s grav jump and a conversation with the enigmatic Great Serpent, along with the Serpent’s Crusade led by Jinan Va’ruun, adds depth and mystery to your character’s background.

For an adventurous and immersive gameplay experience, I highly recommend selecting the Serpent’s Embrace Religion.
